Privacy Policy
Last updated: September 24, 2026
This Privacy Policy explains how Zion Datum Public Benefit Corporation ("Zion PBC," "we," "us," or "our") collects, uses, and shares personal information when you use Zion's OutPosts ("OutPosts" or the "Service"). It also describes your privacy rights, including rights under the California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA/CPRA).
We are a public benefit corporation, and we built OutPosts to serve communities. We collect only what we need to run the Service, and we do not sell your personal information.
Information we collect
Information you provide
- Account information: email address or phone number, and the credentials used to sign in. If you sign up or verify with a phone number, we use it to send one-time verification codes by SMS; we do not use it for marketing.
- Date of birth: collected at sign-up to confirm you meet our 16+ minimum age. We store your date of birth privately and use it for age verification; it is not shown on your public profile.
- Profile information: display name, username, bio, and avatar.
- Content you create: posts (text, photos, video), comments, direct messages, Shouts listings, polls and poll votes, Community Notes, reactions, and reports.
- Verification information: information you submit to request a verification badge, which may include identity details or documents and, where used, information processed by a third-party identity provider.
- Communications: messages you send to us, such as support requests.
Information collected automatically
- Location information: if you grant permission, approximate or precise device location to show nearby OutPosts and community content. Some content (such as Shouts and OutPosts) may include a location you choose to attach.
- Device and push information: a push notification token and basic device/platform details used to deliver notifications.
- Usage and diagnostic information: app activity and error/crash diagnostics used to keep the Service working and to improve it.
Information from device permissions
With your permission, OutPosts may access your camera, microphone, photo library, and location to enable features like creating posts and finding nearby OutPosts. You can change these permissions in your device settings at any time.
How we use information
- To provide, operate, and maintain the Service and your account.
- To display content, OutPosts, and community features, and to power search and the map.
- To deliver push notifications you have enabled (for example, when you earn a verification badge).
- To enable the Shouts marketplace, polls, Community Notes, and other community features.
- To keep the community safe: moderation, enforcing our Guidelines, detecting abuse and fraud, and responding to reports.
- To verify identity and grant badges where you request them.
- To communicate with you about the Service and respond to your requests.
- To improve the Service and fix problems.
- To comply with law and protect the rights, safety, and property of members, the public, and Zion PBC.
How we share information
We share personal information only as described here. We do not sell your personal information, and we do not share it for cross-context behavioral advertising.
- With other members: your profile and the content you choose to post are visible to others according to the audience and features you use. Direct messages are shared with the people you message.
- With service providers who process information on our behalf, under contract and only to provide their services to us, including:
- Cloud hosting, database, storage, and authentication (Supabase).
- Push notification delivery (Expo's push service, Apple Push Notification service, and Google Firebase Cloud Messaging).
- Real-time audio/video features, where used (LiveKit).
- Maps and place lookup/geocoding (OpenStreetMap / Nominatim).
- Error and performance monitoring (Sentry).
- For identity verification: with a third-party identity provider where you choose to use verification, and only as needed for that purpose.
- For legal and safety reasons: to comply with law, legal process, or government requests; to enforce our Terms and Guidelines; and to protect the rights, safety, and property of members, the public, or Zion PBC.
- In a business transfer: if Zion PBC is involved in a merger, acquisition, or sale of assets, information may be transferred as part of that transaction, subject to this Policy.
Your privacy rights
Depending on where you live, you may have rights regarding your personal information, including the right to:
- Know and access the personal information we hold about you.
- Request a copy of your data (data portability).
- Correct inaccurate information.
- Delete your personal information.
- Opt out of the sale or sharing of personal information (note: we do not sell or share your personal information for advertising).
- Not be discriminated against for exercising your rights.
How to exercise your rights
OutPosts includes a Privacy & Data screen where you can request an export of your data or request deletion of your account and content. We process export and deletion requests for the OutPosts data associated with your account. When you delete your account, we remove or anonymize your content, except for limited records we are required or permitted to keep for legal, security, or moderation-integrity reasons. You may also contact us using the details below.
We will respond to verifiable requests as required by applicable law. You may designate an authorized agent to make a request on your behalf where the law allows.
Data retention
We keep personal information for as long as your account is active or as needed to provide the Service. After deletion, we may retain limited information to comply with legal obligations, resolve disputes, prevent abuse, and maintain the integrity of moderation and safety records. Backups are retained for a limited period and then overwritten.
Security
We use reasonable technical and organizational measures to protect personal information, including access controls and encryption in transit. No method of transmission or storage is completely secure, so we cannot guarantee absolute security. Protect your account by keeping your login credentials private.
Minimum age and minors
OutPosts is intended for people 16 and older. It is not directed to children under 16, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from anyone under 16. We ask for your date of birth when you create an account to confirm you meet this minimum age. If you believe someone under 16 has created an account or provided us personal information, contact us and we will take appropriate steps to close the account and delete the information.
Location data
Location features are optional and controlled by your device permissions. If you grant location access, we use it to show nearby OutPosts and community content. You can turn off location access at any time in your device settings, though some features may stop working.
Third-party links and services
OutPosts may link to or interoperate with third-party services, including our related product LP Account. Their handling of your information is governed by their own privacy policies, and we encourage you to review them.
International users
OutPosts is operated from the United States, and your information is processed in the United States. If you use the Service from outside the United States, you understand your information will be transferred to and processed in the United States.
Changes to this Policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. When changes are material, we will notify you in the app. The "Last updated" date above shows when this Policy was last revised.
